What Exactly Is a Board Foot?
A board foot is a unit of volume used to measure lumber. It represents a piece of wood that is 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long. That works out to 144 cubic inches of wood.
Here's why this matters. When you buy lumber, especially hardwood, you're not paying for length alone. You're paying for the actual volume of wood. A 2x4 and a 1x12 might both be 8 feet long, but they contain very different amounts of wood. Board feet account for thickness, width, and length all at once.
The lumber industry in North America has used this measurement for over a century. Sawmills, lumber yards, and hardwood dealers all price rough lumber by the board foot. So if you want to budget a project accurately, you need to understand how this measurement works.
The Board Foot Formula
The formula is straightforward:
Board Feet = (Thickness × Width × Length) ÷ 144
All measurements need to be in inches. If your length is in feet, multiply by 12 first.
Let's say you have a board that is 1 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 8 feet long. First, convert the length: 8 feet × 12 = 96 inches. Then plug it in: (1 × 6 × 96) ÷ 144 = 4 board feet.
If you're calculating multiple boards, just multiply the result by the quantity. Ten of those boards would be 40 board feet.
Nominal vs Actual Dimensions: This Trips People Up
Here's something that confuses a lot of people, and honestly, it confused me too when I started woodworking.
When you see a "2x4" at the hardware store, it's not actually 2 inches by 4 inches. It's 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches. The "2x4" is the nominal size, which refers to the rough sawn dimensions before the board is planed smooth.
This matters for board foot calculations because rough sawn lumber is measured at nominal size, while surfaced lumber (S2S or S4S) is measured at actual size.
So a rough sawn 2x4x8 is calculated as: (2 × 4 × 96) ÷ 144 = 5.33 board feet.
But a surfaced 2x4x8 (actual 1.5 × 3.5) is: (1.5 × 3.5 × 96) ÷ 144 = 3.5 board feet.
The difference is significant. If you're buying rough lumber from a sawmill, they'll calculate using nominal dimensions. If you're buying S4S from a hardwood dealer, they might use actual dimensions. Always ask.
The Quarter System: What 4/4, 6/4, and 8/4 Mean
When you buy hardwood, thickness is usually described in quarters. This is an old system that dates back to when boards were rough sawn to thickness and sold that way.
4/4 (read as "four quarter") means the board is approximately 1 inch thick when rough sawn. After surfacing, it's usually about 13/16 inch.
6/4 means about 1.5 inches rough, surfacing down to roughly 1 5/16 inch.
8/4 means about 2 inches rough, surfacing to about 1 3/4 inch.
You'll also see 5/4, 10/4, and 12/4 for specialty applications. The quarter system is used almost exclusively for hardwoods in North America. Softwoods and construction lumber use nominal dimensions instead (like 2x4, 2x6).
When calculating board feet for hardwood, use the rough sawn thickness. So 4/4 lumber is calculated as 1 inch thick, even though the finished board will be thinner.
Real-World Example: Building a Table
Let's walk through a practical example. Say you're building a dining table and need the following pieces:
4 table legs: 3 inches × 3 inches × 30 inches each 2 long aprons: 1 inch × 4 inches × 48 inches each 2 short aprons: 1 inch × 4 inches × 30 inches each 1 tabletop: multiple boards, 1 inch × 6 inches × 60 inches, you need 6 boards
Legs: (3 × 3 × 30) ÷ 144 = 1.875 BF each × 4 = 7.5 BF Long aprons: (1 × 4 × 48) ÷ 144 = 1.33 BF each × 2 = 2.67 BF Short aprons: (1 × 4 × 30) ÷ 144 = 0.83 BF each × 2 = 1.67 BF Tabletop: (1 × 6 × 60) ÷ 144 = 2.5 BF each × 6 = 15 BF
Total: 7.5 + 2.67 + 1.67 + 15 = 26.84 board feet
Now add your waste factor. For a project like this with milling and cuts, I'd add 20%. So 26.84 × 1.20 = 32.2 board feet. Round up and budget for about 33 board feet.
If the wood costs $8 per board foot, your lumber budget is about $264.
Board Feet vs Linear Feet: When to Use Each
Board feet measure volume. Linear feet measure length. You'll encounter both depending on what you're buying.
Rough lumber and hardwood slabs are almost always priced by the board foot. This makes sense because you're buying a three-dimensional chunk of wood. Thickness and width matter just as much as length.
Trim, moulding, and dimensional lumber (like 2x4s at a big box store) are usually priced by the linear foot. That's because these products come in standardized widths and thicknesses. You're really just paying for length.
If you need to convert between them, here's how. To go from linear feet to board feet: multiply by the width in inches, multiply by the thickness in inches, then divide by 144. So 10 linear feet of 1x6 material is: 10 × 6 × 1 ÷ 12 = 5 board feet.
To go from board feet to linear feet: multiply by 144, then divide by width, then divide by thickness.
Common Mistakes I See People Make
After helping a lot of woodworkers figure out their lumber needs, I've noticed the same mistakes coming up over and over.
First, forgetting to convert feet to inches. The formula requires all measurements in inches. If your board is 8 feet long, that's 96 inches. Skip this step and your answer will be off by a factor of 12.
Second, using actual dimensions when they should use nominal, or vice versa. Check with your supplier. Rough lumber uses nominal. Surfaced lumber uses actual.
Third, forgetting the waste factor. You will never get 100% yield from a board. There are knots, checks, splits, and grain issues you'll need to cut around. For FAS grade hardwood, add 10 to 15%. For lower grades, add 20 to 30%.
Fourth, not accounting for milling. If you're buying rough lumber and planing it yourself, you'll lose thickness. A 4/4 board starts at about 1 inch but ends up at 13/16 inch after you joint and plane it. That lost material is part of your cost.
Log Rules: Doyle, Scribner, and International
If you're buying logs or having trees sawn, you'll run into log rules. These are formulas that estimate how many board feet you can get from a log.
The Doyle rule is the most common in the eastern United States. It tends to underestimate for small logs and overestimate for large ones. It uses the small-end diameter and the length of the log.
The Scribner rule is more conservative and is common in the western states. It's based on diagrams of boards that can be cut from a log.
The International 1/4-inch rule is considered the most accurate. It accounts for kerf (the wood lost to the saw blade) and uses a consistent 1/4-inch allowance.
If someone tells you a log has "200 board feet by Doyle," that's an estimate. The actual yield depends on the log's shape, defects, and how it's sawn. But it gives you a starting point for pricing.
